  Deficits in prospective memory following damage to the prefrontal cortex

  Prospective memory (PM) refers to memory for future intentions and consists of a prospective memory component (PMC), remembering to remember, and a retrospective component, remembering the intended action. Although the rostral prefrontal cortex has been implicated in PM, the neural substrates of PMC remain unclear. We examined 74 participants with traumatic brain injury, including focal frontal or temporal lesions, using neuropsychological tests and a PM task. Discriminant function analysis identified the right dorsolateral, right ventromedial, and left dorsomedial prefrontal cortices as important contributors to PM performance. Better PM performance was also associated with higher orientation scores, suggesting that PMC is an integrated memory function related to awareness of current status. These findings clarify the neural and functional basis of PMC.
