  Retrospective time estimation following damage to the prefrontal cortex

  We investigated retrospective time estimation in 99 patients with brain damage to clarify the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in estimating a 30-min interval. Patients with bilateral PFC damage showed significantly more overestimation than those with damage to other brain regions. Analyses revealed that the right lateral PFC and left medial PFC contributed to overestimation, with the right lateral PFC showing a particularly strong effect. The overestimation group also showed lower general cognitive function and orientation scores, and estimated time was negatively correlated with delayed word recall. These findings suggest that accurate estimation of longer time intervals depends on the PFC and memory processes related to contextual memory.
